It seems like the more you get out there, the more opportunities present themselves!
In addition to providing book translations I particularly enjoy translating medical and pharmacological texts - a particular interest of mine.
I taught German in the classroom, developed teaching materials for a university level German course, and I still enjoy editing and proofreading German teaching materials for the classroom.
I also subtitle a number of TV-series, most in German, some in English. My catalogue includes the hit series NCIS and all its spin-offs, The Tudors, Breaking Bad, The Good Wife, The Bachelor ... just to name a few.
My very favorite job though is interpreting over the phone! It's really a perfect situation - I can be available for incoming calls while working on any one of my other projects. Have you ever thought about how many native Germans live or work in the US, and how many German tourists visit the US year-round? I never did, before starting to work for a company that provides over-the-phone interpretation services. Through them, I get connected to emergency rooms, physicians' offices and psychiatric hospital units. I become involved in court or other official hearings, or talk to rental car or insurance companies - you name it, and I am sure I have interpreted it! I connect "to the world" from my very own desk at home, and I never know what my next call will bring. An absolutely fascinating occupation!!
